Cafe Cinematheque Synopsis: African cinemaÕs founding father, 81-year-old Ousmane Sembene, continues to be its most fiery, provocative spirit with this winner of the Grand Prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and 2005 Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. A rousing polemic directed against the still common African practice of female circumcision, this powerful story, places the action amid a colorful, vibrant tapestry of village life. Through a narrative that expands well beyond the bounds of straightforward, socially conscious realism, we are exposed to an imaginative array of emblematic metaphors, mythic overtones and musical numbers.

Cafe Cinematheque Synopsis: Considered to be a highly provocative film, and ŌblasphemousĶ by the Church, Marco BellocchioÕs My MotherÕs Smile is a fascinating portrait of a man who is forced to reconcile with his own atheism after receiving a shocking appeal from the Church requesting his participation in the canonization of his "saintly" mother. Although pressured by his entire family, in his heart, Ernesto doesnÕt believe his mother should be a saint, and says so, much to the anger of the Church. Overwhelmed by a conspiracy he didnÕt realize, the conflicts haunting him come to the fore and his memory of his mother (his motherÕs smile) opens up a gaping chasm that forces him to reconsider the past and live the present differently.
