Review: In the otherwise all-smiles making-of documentary to this less-than-regal sequel, Anne Hathaway reveals she was initially concerned about reprising her role of Princess Mia. Before filming began, Hathaway says she felt she no longer knew the geeky schoolgirl of royal descent she charmingly played in The Princess Diaries. And after watching Royal Engagement, itÕs understandable if fans of The Princess Diaries canÕt recognize the heir of the throne of the fictional Genovia. She was always a little clumsy, but in Royal Engagement, sheÕs now the biggest klutz to ever step foot on Genoivan soil. Not even the Three Stooges endured such physical humiliation. Consequently, youÕre more concerned about poor MiaÕs health than whether her martial status will prevent her from assuming the throne from her grandmother (the graceful Julie Andrews). Even director Garry Marshall, while introducing the filmÕs deleted scenes, acknowledges that Mia is too accident prone in Royal Engagement. Thankfully he cut one scene in which Mia tumbles out of a pear tree. Bruises aside, Royal Engagement unfortunately lacks the allure and sparkle of its predecessor. ItÕs also more juvenile and brainless. This should delight tween girls but bore their parents. Same goes for The PD2 Makeover, which treats HathawayÕs stand-in to a haircut and wardrobe change fit for a princess, and Kelly ClarksonÕs pointless Breakaway music video. The commentary by Andrews and Marshall is brisk and often quite amusing, but the Raven-hosted Making of Royal Engagement is nothing more than a shameless informercial for the fairy taleÕs bubblegum-pop soundtrack. All in all, a terrible Mia cupla.
